Unplug?

As the Internet was developed, online video games grows too. It was seen as the biggest source leading people losing focus on their work or school. Is this the only reason? Is unplug the only way to solve this circumstanced?

I don't think so. As unplugging means we will give up our advantage of the Internet. It would not be worth to only because we want to get rid of online video games.

Political correctness

Movie and TV programs always contain topic related to discrimination. While describing them in the programs, people would often examine their political correctness. Upon the issue, it would be hard to find out the button line for it as people’s standards vary. Is political correctness really an issue to the world?

I personally would not agree with applying the political correctness to everything on the TV. As I found movies and programs are a medium to express and spread their main message to the viewers, they are supposed to simulate the realest scenes even though they contain message offenses others.

Notion of News

While news report is expected to fair and just, ironically, their choice of news has already shown it is a bias in the first place. Why is a news becomes a news? The one who decided what to be reported indeed has indicated that he or she has some thoughts within the issue. Even with fair and just reporting tone, a simple robbing event indeed concealed a notion to let people think of the robber is always bad. Everything being mentioned in the news has already be considered. It is also an element to let people know who and what is in there.

As time goes by, I started to realize news report is not a fair show. It is a power of affecting people view on an issue. No matter how fair the reporting tone is, the standing point is already decided. It is just like a formal paparazzi, the only difference is the reporting subject. When I watch a news now, the only thing I normally would think of is why is this news being reported?

New(s) trend

News became a very important media for everybody to gain the first information of the world. However, the trend has been changing in Hong Kong. People in this generation tend to learn news about others' sad and bloody news. They became careless to how the world is changing or how problems need to be solved.

A channel, Apple daily news, has invented a new manner to tell the news. It is animation. Interestingly, with their funny tone of telling the story, even if the news is not related to our life, people still want to learn about them. It is already a trend. People in Hong Kong no longer watch news that related to they but only shallow news about others' embarrassing life.

Animation

In the late 1800s, animations were popular spreading from America to Japan and even china. Children became mainly the selling target. I am not an exception too. Along with the power of media technology, I remembered the some of the scenes were being discussed between my classmate and I. sometime we would even play the role in the animations. It seems the influences was not small at all toward the children in the late 1800s.

Considering the effects of animations, producing a new animation is not an easy at all. It sometime became the main element to form a child's mind or morality. If the animation advocated bad values, those children watching it might preform the same as they think it was interesting. For our new generation and the future of the world, I think it is an important consideration to concern the world of animation production.

Facebook

As Facebook was introduced, a new trend of communication was grown. Instead of hanging out at a mall, we would play games and chat with friends mostly through Internet. Sharing pictures, news, and opinions would now be dealed in Facebook. We seem are adapting a new generation of life like fantasy movies do.

Is the new trend good or bad for people? It varies. Recently, there are less people using photo binders, dairy. I have recalled the time my grandmother and grandfather dead. I often brought out a binder to see and learn every moment of them through the pictures and asking my mother. But as time goes by, Facebook may substituted for those book and dairy. To learn about our friends, we would see us logging in to our Facebook and looking at the person's page we want to see instead of asking the people who they are close to about their past.

Morality of Internet

Politeness is an important skill within conversations nowadays. However, during war time, morality would be expected to be lower as if it has never existed. Politeness would inversely become a deathly weapon to yourself because your enemies would never be mercy to you. The atmosphere recently spread to internet culture only they use foul language and rude instead of murdering.

How does this happen? Perhaps, it is because they realized their enemy can never discover their identity. They thought they could say anything they want without fearing others to found out. Just like a war between two countries, they could launch a series of terrorism attacks on other country without considering the morality standard as an human being. In the future, to solve this atmosphere, maybe fake identities on the Internet may no longer be allowed so that you will be responsible for what you said.

New image

As video games was introduced to the media world, its side effects were argued since then. While a lot of statistics showed that video games would poison children with addiction, a game designer, Jane McGonigal, advocated an idea of playing video games to make the world better.

By turning job in life into a game, she discovered "gamers" would gain more motivation to live and keep working. Not only "gamers" have more motivation to work, but also the motivation to pursue improvement in performances. People would keep it up even after they encountered millions of failures. She looks at things just like an addicted video gamer. Interestingly, the word "addicted" would no longer only use for describing something bad anymore.

Foul language through Internet

In reality, people speak foul language to express their anger. With the invention of the Internet, people now also have access to speak foul language to express their emotion to the world. Is this a good or bad news? Should foul language be prohibited in the Internet like television shows?

Even I agree, there is no way to do that. As content is too hard to be examined one by one in the Internet, there is no way for an organization to do that. However, foul language is not always bad at all time. In Hong Kong, there are several online tutorials teaching viewers English with the foul language. A famous blogger named siu82english realized an effective rule for most Hong Kong people to learn English, which is to start from foul language. Because of students' curiosity, he believed foul language indeed could trigger student to further explore the grammar inside the foul language, also a habit to check dictionary often. Foul language, beside express anger, perhaps indeed contains more positive value than we expected.

Side effect of the new technology

With an invention of filming, people nowadays are capable to have access to the fresh news around the world just by clicking a certain buttons on the keyboard. The diverse development of this medium later was applied on reporting people's privacy like paparazzi toward celebrities. Many people were affected seriously. Under the absent of the restrictions from the Government, this trend was further developed as a way of bullying.
In Hong Kong, this culture was popularly used as a way of punishments. Celebrities no longer are the only victims. As long as there is a potential to draw other's attentions, there will be victims with their private pictures or videos posted online. This behavior although is morally wrong, this culture unexpectedly altered people's behavior in a better way. It is probably because the bullying, by posting the issues online, indeed works as a judgment under majority's value and morality standard. Without a good reason or excuse, people would rather do someone favor others instead of running a risk to do someone against the majority's standard becoming the biggest jerk in the history. With a limitation of right for the government to control this behavior, perhaps, cyber bullying might become a neo-method of keeping people to behave right instead of police.

Youtube? Sharing or selling?

With the ability to draw a million of people’s attentions, Youtube as well as other third party websites is walking toward the use of commercialization instead of personal sharing. Youtube was purchased since 2005. The original purpose to share video clips and messages were gradually whelmed by government and commercial’s use. Playing a clip with a certain amount of views would now be commercialized with a 30 seconds of an unrelated subject commercial prior to the clip. The purity of sharing gradually becomes a major medium and platform for business and advertising.

Are the purity and simplicity of sharing disappearing? Is it a bad situation for a long term? It is hard to tell. Since, those websites have never clearly stated their purpose of sharing was for non-profit use. If they did, they could then change it by editing the page of “about us” at the corner of the site again at any time as they want. The existence of a disgusting feeling was because of our over expectation, which caused us to believe that those mediums are for sharing only. Not selling. Obviously, we were all wrong when it comes to money. We have the right to feel angry, but we cannot force anyone to change but ourselves. Maybe it is time for us to edit our “page of about us” now.
